Innovators Class - Year 6
Welcome to Innovator's Class
Year 6 'Meet the teacher' information slides.
This term in Year 6, we will focus on a diverse and engaging curriculum across various subjects.
Maths: Students will explore decimals, emphasising place value, rounding, and operations. They will master multiplying and dividing decimals by powers of 10 and convert fractions to decimals. Our focus will also extend to percentages, covering comprehension, conversion, and problem-solving with missing values. Furthermore, we will tackle perimeter, area, and volume, including practical applications such as calculating the area of triangles and parallelograms.
Writing: In writing sessions, students will immerse themselves in story writing, focusing on setting, characterisation, and narrative structure. They will employ expanded noun phrases, effective sentence starters, and fronted adverbials to enhance their narratives. Alongside storytelling, they will practise diary writing, using the pronoun "I" and incorporating time connectives for coherent narration while experimenting with different sentence structures.
Reading: Students will continue reading "Holes" by Louis Sachar, developing skills in inference, retrieval, summarising, comparison, prediction, and comprehension, which will encourage discussion at home.
Science: Our science curriculum will cover evolution and inheritance, exploring concepts such as genetic variation and adaptation. Students will engage with evidence for evolution, including fossil records, and examine human intervention's impact on adaptation.
Geography: In geography, we will investigate South America, identifying physical and human characteristics. Students will learn to locate countries and capitals, understand climate zones, and analyse settlement patterns and trade links.
PE: Scheduled for Mondays and Fridays, students will explore Dance and Tennis. In Dance, themed units will include creating movement phrases and choreography inspired by "Waiting for…" and "70s Disco." In Tennis, they will improve techniques for forehand, backhand, and volleys while applying tactical strategies for gameplay.
Spanish: This term, we will learn about "El fin de semana" (The Weekend), focusing on telling time accurately and vocabulary for weekend activities. Reinforcement will occur through reading, listening, and integrating connectives for phrases.
Music: Students will engage with the Rockschool Ukulele Method, covering tuning, holding, reading music, and playing chords C, D, and E. They will also learn strumming techniques and improvisation using more advanced chords.
Art: Drawing inspiration from Giacometti's sculptures, students will research, analyse his style, and work on practical skills. The process will culminate in a final piece that reflects their interpretation of his work, encouraging creative expression.
Computing: In computing, students will utilise tools like 2Connect and 2Create a Story to craft a "Choose Your Own Adventure" story, developing logical design and digital storytelling skills while fostering creativity.
Religious Education: Our focus will be on Christianity's Journey of Life and Death, examining the concept of resurrection and its impact on beliefs, along with discussing Biblical narratives and church practices.
